How to Consolidate Shipments from China

The short answer: to consolidate shipments from China, have every supplier deliver to one warehouse in China, check and count each delivery there, repack if needed, and ship everything together in one container or shared shipment. You pay one freight bill and clear customs once, instead of paying for many small shipments. It works best when your suppliers are close to each other, as they are in Yiwu.

Here’s how consolidation works in our Yiwu warehouse, step by step.

Why consolidate?

Cartons from several suppliers in the OLWAN warehouse in Yiwu before shipping
  • Lower freight cost per item. Freight is priced by volume. One well-packed shipment costs less than several half-empty ones.
  • One customs clearance. One set of documents and one duty payment at destination.
  • Problems found in China. Missing or damaged goods get caught while suppliers can still fix them.

How multi-supplier consolidation works: 6 steps

1. Give every supplier the same delivery instructions

Warehouse address, delivery deadline, and your order code, to be written on every carton. Missing codes are the most common cause of lost cartons.

2. Receive and count

The warehouse counts cartons against each supplier’s packing list and photographs the delivery. Shortages are reported to you the same day.

3. Check the goods

At minimum, a visual check of cartons for damage. For quality, book a full inspection, either at the factory before delivery or in the warehouse. → Quality inspection

4. Repack and label

Weak cartons get replaced. Small cartons can be combined. For Amazon sellers, FBA labels go on here.

5. Plan the load

With every carton measured, the team decides between a shared container (LCL) and a full container (FCL), and plans the loading order. Use our CBM calculator to estimate your volume.

6. Load and ship

The goods are loaded, photographed and shipped, by sea, air or express, with DDP to your door if you want it.

How long does consolidation take?

It depends on your slowest supplier. The warehouse can’t ship until the last delivery arrives. Once everything is in, we can usually prepare and load the same day or the next day. Set supplier deadlines a few days before your planned shipping date.
