Sourcing Agent vs Alibaba vs Buying Direct
By Hasan Olwan, in Yiwu since 2009 · Last updated: September 27, 2026
The short answer: Alibaba is best for researching products and buying simple items from one supplier. Buying direct works if you can visit China and manage suppliers yourself. A sourcing agent makes sense when you’re buying from several suppliers, need quality checked before you pay, or can’t be in China. Each route can work. The difference is who carries the risk at each step.
I’ll compare the three routes on the five points that decide most orders: price, supplier risk, quality control, small orders, and shipping.
The comparison
| Sourcing agent | Alibaba | Buying direct | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Factory price + published fee (3–10%) | Listed price, often from trading companies | Factory price, if you find the factory |
| Supplier checks | Legal check or visit by the agent | Platform badges and reviews | Your own research |
| Negotiation | In Chinese, by the agent | In English, with the seller’s rep | Through translators or apps |
| Quality before paying | Agent inspects on site | Third-party inspection you book | Hard from abroad |
| Many suppliers in one shipment | Yes, agent consolidates | Usually one supplier per order | You arrange it |
| Small orders | Yes, with a minimum fee | Depends on the seller’s MOQ | Depends on the supplier’s MOQ |
| Payment protection | Agent pays after checks | Trade Assurance on eligible orders | Bank transfer, little protection |
| Your time | Low | Medium | High |
1. When Alibaba is the right choice
Alibaba is a great research tool. Use it to find product types, compare listed prices and see which regions make what. It’s often enough on its own when:
- You’re buying one product from one supplier
- The product is simple and quality is easy to judge from a sample
- The order is covered by Alibaba’s Trade Assurance
This is the part most people get wrong: many Alibaba sellers are trading companies, not factories. That’s not always bad, but the price includes their margin.
2. When buying direct is the right choice
Buying direct works when you can travel to China, speak the language or have a trusted translator, and have time to follow production. Many experienced importers do this for their core products.
3. When a sourcing agent is the right choice
A sourcing agent makes sense when:
- You’re buying from several suppliers and want one shipment
- You need quality checked before you pay the balance
- You’re buying in Yiwu market, where most suppliers aren’t on Alibaba
- You can’t be in China to follow up
To be completely transparent: if you buy one product from one supplier you trust, and you can book an inspection yourself, you may not need an agent.
Is Yiwu market cheaper than Alibaba?
Often, yes, for small commodities. Many Yiwu booths are run by factories or their direct agents, and prices at the booth are often 20–40% lower than Alibaba listings for the same product, because those listings are aimed at foreign buyers. But you need someone on the ground to find the right booth, negotiate, and collect the goods.
Summary
- Alibaba: best for research and simple single-supplier orders.
- Buying direct: best if you can be in China and manage suppliers yourself.
- Sourcing agent: best for multi-supplier orders, quality control before paying, and buying in Yiwu market.
